REPAIRING A SAGGING DOOR
Occasionally a door might sag under its own weight, making it hard to open and close. This is almost always the type of situation that won’t naturally sort itself out over time. While sanding the top of the door might temporarily fix the issue, it will only get worse over time. One possible long-term solution is to remove the screws from the upper hinge and replace them with longer screws — three-inch decking screws should do the trick. These screws will pass through the jamb and sink into the studs of the rough opening, providing a tighter hold, which should fix the sag.
REPAIRING A DOOR THAT STICKS
Repairing a sticking door typically involves sanding down the portion of the door that is sticking. To identify exactly what area to sand, you can use a piece of carbon paper. Place this paper in the area you suspect, close it, open it back up, and then sand the area that is marked by the paper. After sanding, be sure to seal the recently sanded area with varnish to prevent future moisture problems.
REPAIRING A DRAFTY DOOR
While drafty doors aren’t always noticed here in Fort Worth, they are a little more apparent in colder climates. Either way, a drafty door isn’t something you want to ignore. Drafts can directly impact the efficiency of your cooling costs. To remedy a drafty door, most homeowners choose to install a storm door or add weather stripping. A storm door is often a great solution because on the pleasant days, a storm door with a screen can be used to circulate the air, letting cool air in and keeping the bugs out.
